Stretched earlobe repair

Ear tunnel correction – restoring the earlobe

So-called ear tunnels are often worn for fashion and style reasons. The earlobes are stretched with rings or so-called plugs. This stretching makes tunnels in the earlobe several centimetres in diameter possible. But what can you do if you have had enough of this body jewellery or it becomes a problem in a new job?

It is possible to reduce heavily stretched ear tunnels gradually with ever smaller rings. However, depending on age, this method is extremely lengthy and has only very limited prospects of success. In addition, a hole always remains.

To reconstruct an earlobe in its original shape, the procedure of a plastic surgeon is therefore often unavoidable. The outermost layer of skin under the ring is removed and a wedge is cut into the lower part of the earlobe. The well-perfused tissue is then redistributed, the desired shape is modelled and stitched together with ultra-fine absorbable sutures.

The procedure usually takes place under local anaesthesia, with twilight sedation if needed.

After the ear tunnel correction, the wound is covered with an inconspicuous plaster dressing for a maximum of 14 days. The patient can go out in public straight away and can do sport again after 2 days. The outer stitches are removed after 14 days at the latest; the inner stitches dissolve by themselves after a few weeks. If the patient would like a new ear piercing, this should be done after 2 months at the earliest and outside the reconstructed part.

In a consultation, Dr. Handl informs you about the course of the operation and possible risks.

Dr. Handl in Vienna stands for experience

Ear tunnel correction is a surgical procedure performed to reduce the size of ear tunnels or to close them. It is often chosen by people who used to wear tunnels in their earlobes but now want to return to a more natural look.

In Vienna, Dr. Handl is one of the leading experts in ear tunnel correction and has gained extensive experience in this field. He uses the most modern technologies and techniques to ensure that the results look as natural as possible while meeting the patients' wishes.

In addition to ear tunnel correction, Dr. Handl also offers earlobe restoration. This is a common treatment for people who have worn heavy earrings or have suffered earlobe injuries for other reasons. Dr. Handl strives to restore the natural shape and appearance of the earlobe while keeping the safety and well-being of his patients in mind.

The day of ear tunnel correction

Ear tunnel correction is a minimally invasive procedure performed to correct ear piercings that are too large or uneven. Under the direction of Dr. Handl in Vienna, the procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure and usually under local anaesthesia. At the patient's request, light sedation can also be used to make the procedure as comfortable as possible. The procedure usually takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

In the consultation, Dr. Handl assesses how much the earlobe is stretched or torn and how it can be reshaped. Take out the tunnel or jewellery a few days beforehand so that the tissue can settle. The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin for one week beforehand.

Risks

The procedure under local anaesthesia is small. Bruising, swelling, infection and wound-healing problems are possible. A small notch or a visible scar may remain on the earlobe; rarely, the scar tends to thicken or overgrow (keloid). A new ear piercing should be made after two months at the earliest.

In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

You wear an inconspicuous plaster dressing for about 10 to 14 days and can go out in public again straight away. Office work is possible after one day, sport after two days. The stitches are removed after 10 to 14 days.

Afterwards, care for the scar for a few weeks and protect it from direct sun. A new ear piercing can be made after about two months at the earliest, not directly in the scar.

Frequently asked questions

When does earlobe reconstruction make sense?

Earlobe reconstruction can be performed for torn or stretched ear piercings. From a diameter of about 1.5 cm, so-called ear tunnels can no longer shrink back to their natural size by themselves. If they are felt to be bothersome, correction with a small operation is recommended.

How long does an ear tunnel correction take?

Dr. Handl performs all operations without time pressure. Depending on the effort and surgical technique, an ear tunnel correction takes between 30 and 45 minutes.

What are the risks of an earlobe correction?

Like all surgical procedures, an earlobe correction carries risks. These can include redness, swelling and scarring. However, earlobe correction is a relatively low-risk procedure. In the consultation, Dr. Handl informs you in detail about all the risks.

How does an ear tunnel correction work?

The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. When correcting ear tunnels, the earlobes are not simply stitched together but shaped so that the result is as natural as possible and the original round, harmonious shape of the earlobe is restored. For this, it is usually necessary to remove part of the overstretched tissue in the lower part of the earlobe.

How are torn earlobes corrected?

The procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. For torn ear piercings, the torn area is cut out and closed with fine stitches. Sometimes small flap techniques are used to optimise the result. A natural and harmonious shape of the earlobe is restored.

Can an earlobe correction be performed under local anaesthesia?

Ear tunnel correction is always performed under local anaesthesia. Twilight sedation is also possible on request.

Is an earlobe correction painful?

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia and is therefore usually not felt to be painful.

What should I bear in mind after an earlobe correction?

After correcting ear tunnels or torn earlobes, only an inconspicuous plaster dressing is worn for about 10–14 days. Patients can therefore usually go out in public again straight away. After the 10–14 days, the stitches are removed. For optimal healing of the scar, Dr. Handl recommends using scar care products in the first weeks and avoiding direct sunlight. If you would like a new ear piercing, this is possible again about 2 months after the correction. However, care should be taken not to pierce new holes along the stitched scar.

What scars or marks remain after an earlobe correction?

Dr. Handl takes particular care with the stitching, so that in the end only a scar in the form of a very small white line remains, which is practically invisible from a normal distance. For optimal healing of the scar, using scar care products and protecting the scar from direct sunlight is recommended.

When can I do sport again after an earlobe correction?

It is recommended to avoid sport for the first 2 weeks after the procedure so as not to impair healing.

When can I go out in public again after an earlobe correction?

As only an inconspicuous plaster dressing has to be worn for about 10–14 days after the procedure, patients can usually go out in public again straight away.
