Fat-dissolving injections

Minimally invasive treatment for fat deposits

Where on the body stubborn fat deposits form is often genetically determined. This is why these deposits cannot be eliminated even with regular sport and a healthy, controlled diet.

For smaller accumulations of fat, so-called fat-dissolving injections can help. They allow unwanted curves to be changed and brought into proportion with the rest of the body. Classic areas of application are the double chin, eye bags, cheeks or fat accumulations at the knees, heels or ankles. In a personal consultation, Dr. Handl will be happy to explain whether and how fat-dissolving injections are suitable for your body and your individual wishes.

To remove fat deposits, Dr. Handl uses Aqualyx®, a new fat-dissolving injection with lasting results. This therapy makes it possible to melt down and metabolise fat in individual regions in a targeted way. How the treatment works: Aqualyx® is injected directly into the affected areas with a fine needle, which stimulates the fat cells to melt down and increases fat breakdown. The fat is broken down by the body naturally and permanently.

The circumference of the treated region decreases measurably. To achieve an optimal treatment result, professional communication between patient and doctor is essential. Dr. Handl always takes enough time for consultations and works without time pressure. All your questions can be answered and your individual treatment options discussed.

Throughout the treatment, you are personally looked after and accompanied by Dr. Handl. Depending on the region, a different number of sessions may be needed until the desired result is achieved. The treatment with fat-dissolving injections takes place in our treatment room.

After a short rest in our pleasant surroundings, you can return to your everyday life. The result has developed after 3–4 weeks. Depending on the patient's wishes, a further treatment can follow.

Fat-dissolving injections in Vienna with Dr. Handl

Fat-dissolving injections, also known as injection lipolysis or lipolysis, are a minimally invasive treatment for reducing fat accumulations in certain body regions such as the abdomen, hips or thighs. Special active substances, such as phosphatidylcholine, are injected into the fatty tissue with a fine needle. These substances trigger a chemical reaction that destroys the fat cells. The fatty acids released in this way are broken down and excreted by the body.

Fat-dissolving injections are regarded as an alternative to liposuction and can achieve good results in certain patients. However, they are not suitable for treating excess weight, only for reducing stubborn fat deposits. A thorough preliminary examination and individual advice from an experienced doctor are necessary before the treatment.

Dr. Handl also offers fat-dissolving injections at his practice in Vienna and will be happy to advise patients on the possibilities and risks of this treatment.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

In the consultation, Dr. Handl checks whether your fat pad is suitable for fat-dissolving injections. They work on small, clearly defined fat deposits, not on excess weight. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication and alcohol for a few days beforehand. The treatment is performed under local anaesthesia and takes about 10 to 30 minutes.

Risks

Fat-dissolving injections dissolve fat cells in a targeted way (injection lipolysis). Swelling, redness, warmth and a pulling and burning sensation for about a week are therefore intended and typical. Bruising, hardening and small irregularities of the contour are also possible. Allergic reactions are rare. Two to three treatments are often necessary.

In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

You can work again straight away, and sport is possible the next day. Expect swelling, pulling and burning for about a week; this shows that the treatment is working. Drink enough and keep moving, as this helps to remove the dissolved fat. The check-up takes place after four to five weeks, when a decision is made about a further treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Which areas can be treated with fat-dissolving injections?

Fat-dissolving injections can be used in the following areas: double chin, hips, saddlebags, upper arms, abdomen, inner thighs, knees, lipomas, gynaecomastia (male breasts) and a thick neck (“bull neck”).

Who are fat-dissolving injections suitable for?

Treatment with fat-dissolving injections is suitable for anyone who suffers from smaller fat accumulations in certain regions. The classic areas of application are the double chin, eye bags, cheeks or fat accumulations at the knees, heels or ankles. Because the product works with substances that also occur in the body, the treatment is very well tolerated. If larger fat accumulations are to be removed, liposuction is the better choice.

How long does a treatment with fat-dissolving injections take?

Treatment with fat-dissolving injections is a minimally invasive procedure performed on an outpatient basis. Depending on the number of regions, the treatment takes between 10 and 20 minutes.

How many treatments are needed to achieve the desired result?

Depending on the treatment area and the desired fat reduction, a different number of repeat treatments is needed until the result is achieved. Small areas can show a good result after just one treatment. For larger treatment areas, up to 4–5 sessions may be necessary. The treatments should be at least 3 weeks apart.

Will there be a scar after treatment with fat-dissolving injections?

No visible scars remain after the treatment. Small bruises may be visible for a short time after the treatment.

How does treatment with fat-dissolving injections work?

First, the individual requirements and the patient's desired result are discussed in detail in a consultation with Dr. Handl. Once all open questions have been clarified, the treatment takes place in the practice on an outpatient basis. The active substance is injected with a very fine cannula, usually with just one puncture. Afterwards, slight redness and swelling appear at the treated site – a sign that the unwanted fatty tissue is being broken down.

Where is the treatment with fat-dissolving injections carried out?

Treatments with fat-dissolving injections take place in the practice on an outpatient basis. You can return to your everyday life directly after the treatment.

How long does the result last?

The result of treatment with fat-dissolving injections is permanent for the treated area.

What is Aqualyx?

AQUALYX is an aqueous microgel solution for injection. It contains synthetically produced deoxycholic acid, a secondary bile acid. The active substance is provided with a galactose coating and two hydroxyl groups to increase its effectiveness. In the body, deoxycholic acid is produced through various conversion processes in the liver and with the help of bacteria for natural fat digestion. The released fat is excreted via the liver and bile.

What are the risks of treatment with fat-dissolving injections?

Every procedure carries certain risks, but with gentle, minimally invasive methods they are very low. Directly after the treatment, redness, swelling and a feeling of pressure at the injection site may occur. In the consultation, Dr. Handl informs you in detail about all the risks of the treatment method.
