Nipple correction

Inverted nipples, areola reduction, nipple correction

A nipple correction or nipple reduction is a procedure that can give many women back their self-confidence. If you are unhappy with the size, shape or proportions of your nipples, this can affect your self-esteem and lead to discomfort or even shame. A nipple correction can help improve the appearance and symmetry of the nipples and give you a more harmonious and attractive breast appearance.

There are various reasons why women decide on a nipple correction. Often it is an aesthetic wish to make the nipples smaller or larger in order to improve the appearance of the breasts. Pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight changes can also cause changes in the appearance and shape of the nipples. Some women have inverted nipples, in which the nipples are drawn in or flat, which in some cases can even lead to inflammation and problems with breastfeeding.

In other cases, a nipple correction may be necessary because of health problems. For example, it may be needed to restore the appearance of the nipples after breast cancer surgery. Serious accidents or injuries can also lead to nipple injuries that require reconstruction.

Whatever your reasons for considering a nipple correction or nipple reduction, it is important to choose an experienced and qualified surgeon. Surgical methods

Tailored to your anatomy

A nipple correction or nipple operation is a common surgical method for improving the size, shape and position of the nipples. There are many reasons why women decide on a nipple correction. Some women are unhappy with the size or shape of their nipples, while others face complex medical conditions such as inverted nipples or tumours that make a correction necessary.

The operation is usually performed under local anaesthesia with sedation and generally takes less than an hour. An incision a few millimetres long is made at the edge of the nipple to remove excess tissue and reshape the nipples. Various techniques can be used, depending on the patient's needs.

After the operation, patients can recover in pleasant surroundings and are looked after by our professional team. Dr. Handl places great importance on effective aftercare and accompanies patients until healing is complete.

A nipple correction can considerably increase a woman's self-confidence and well-being. Our patients appreciate being able to discuss their worries and concerns in a detailed consultation without time pressure and having their needs addressed individually. We will be happy to help you achieve the best possible result and accompany you on your way to full recovery. Please contact us for further information or to book an appointment.

The operation

Directly before the nipple correction, you are measured and photographed again, and careful documentation is prepared. You can voice wishes and ask questions at any time.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, with twilight sedation if you wish, and usually takes 30 to 60 minutes. Dr. Handl never operates under time pressure, so the operating time varies with the surgical technique, your anatomy and the effort involved.

After the operation, you recover during a rest period in the pleasant surroundings of our premises. Our experienced nursing staff look after you constantly.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

In the consultation, Dr. Handl discusses what is to be corrected, for example inverted nipples, nipples that are too large or an areola that is too large. If your family planning is not yet complete, please mention it, as some techniques can affect the ability to breastfeed. The short procedure is performed under local anaesthesia at the practice. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, as well as alcohol and, if possible, nicotine, which delays wound healing.

Risks

The procedure under local anaesthesia is minor. Bruising, swelling, infection and wound-healing problems are possible. Specifically at the nipple, sensation and sensitivity can change temporarily and rarely permanently, and the ability to breastfeed can be limited. With inverted nipples, the nipple can in rare cases retract again.

In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

After the procedure, you go straight home; desk work is possible again straight away. Wear the dressing or a well-fitting bra and avoid pressure, friction and jolts to the breasts. Do not sleep on your front for two weeks and keep the wound dry for 14 days.

The first check-up takes place after about one week, and the stitches are removed after about 14 days. Light sport is possible after one week. Protect the scars from the sun.

Frequently asked questions

When is a nipple correction advisable?

Patients who are unhappy with the shape or size of their nipples often find this a burden. There can also be medical reasons for a correction. With so-called inverted nipples, for example, inflammation can occur and the ability to breastfeed can be impaired. In many cases, surgery can bring an improvement.

How does a nipple correction affect the ability to breastfeed?

That depends on the surgical technique. There are two methods of correcting inverted nipples. In surgery without cutting the milk ducts, the ability to breastfeed is usually not impaired and in some cases can even be improved by the change in shape. In surgery that cuts the milk ducts, the ability to breastfeed is severely limited. This method is therefore only recommended once family planning is complete.

What are the risks of a nipple correction?

In rare cases, wound-healing problems and inflammation can occur, but these can be treated quite well. If a method that cuts the milk ducts is chosen to correct inverted nipples, this usually leads to a severely limited ability to breastfeed. With surgery that does not cut the milk ducts, this risk is low.

Will there be visible scars after a nipple correction?

An incision a few millimetres long is made at the edge of the nipple. The scars are barely visible after the procedure.

How long does the procedure take?

A nipple correction usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Can the nipples become inverted again after surgery for inverted nipples?

In rare cases, the nipples can become inverted again after surgery. Despite the operation, strands of tissue can form again and pull the nipple inwards once more.

What do I need to consider before the procedure?

Before an operation, it is important to avoid medication that affects blood clotting where possible (e.g. aspirin). You should also largely avoid alcohol and cigarettes. Nicotine can reduce the blood supply to organs and delay wound healing, so we recommend giving up cigarettes as far as possible during the treatment phase. You will find out more in your consultation with Dr. Handl. A thorough preliminary examination also takes place before the procedure.

Is the procedure painful?

The procedure takes place under local anaesthesia with twilight sedation or under general anaesthesia and is therefore usually felt to be hardly painful. In the first days after the procedure, pain can occur, which can be managed with painkillers. Pain perception varies from person to person.

When can I do sport again after a nipple correction?

You should avoid sport for the first 1 to 2 weeks after the procedure.

How long will I be off work after the procedure?

That depends on your job. We recommend taking at least 1 to 2 days to recover after the procedure. Desk work is generally possible again the next day.

What can I do to help the scars heal well?

Dr. Handl pays particular attention to keeping scars inconspicuous. For optimal healing, we also recommend using scar care products and protecting the scar from direct sunlight.
