Piercing hole removal

Closing piercing holes in Vienna

The ring in the eyebrow, the piercing in the nose – what seemed cool and trendy at a young age often looks unprofessional and bothersome as an adult. While piercing holes in tissue covered by mucous membrane (tongue, nipple and intimate piercings) usually close by themselves once the jewellery is removed, nose piercings and upper or lower lip piercings have to be closed surgically.

These unwanted, usually small piercing holes can be removed well with a scalpel.

The skin tube that has formed along the narrow piercing channel after piercing is cut out completely. The narrow channel is then completely stitched up with a fine needle and thread. The thread dissolves by itself. An inconspicuous scar remains.

It is also possible to remove scars that have formed after a piercing hole has “grown closed”. Dr. Handl will be happy to advise you on this.

Dr. Handl also performs ear tunnel corrections; please find out about the procedure here.

On the day of treatment

The short procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia and takes about 30 minutes.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

In the consultation, Dr. Handl looks at the piercing hole and discusses how the site can be closed as inconspicuously as possible. Remove the jewellery a few days beforehand and let any inflammation heal first. The short procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin for one week beforehand.

Risks

The procedure under local anaesthesia is small. Bruising, swelling, infection and wound-healing problems are possible. In place of the piercing hole, a fine, usually inconspicuous scar remains. If you are predisposed, the scar can thicken or overgrow (keloid).

In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

After a short time, you can leave the practice and go out in public again straight away. Sport is possible again the next day. Depending on the suture material, the thread dissolves by itself or is removed at the check-up.

Care for the scar with a scar cream in the first weeks and protect it from direct sun, so that it heals as inconspicuously as possible.

It is a short procedure of about 30 minutes.

What are the risks of piercing hole removal?

The procedure is relatively low-risk. As with any other wound, the wound can become inflamed in a few individual cases. In the personal consultation, Dr. Handl takes the time to inform you about all the risks and answer any open questions.
