Rhinoplasty

Dr. Redtenbacher is the expert in our team

The nose gives a face its characteristic appearance, is important for breathing, enables us to smell and protects us from infections. That is why aesthetics, shape and function must be considered equally in any procedure.

Because every face and every nose is individual and no two are alike, it is important to pay particular attention to the individual facial proportions, so that the change fits harmoniously into the overall appearance and looks completely natural.

Many people are unhappy with the shape or size of their nose; others have their nose operated on for medical reasons. A distinction is therefore made between aesthetic nose operations (e.g. nose correction, nose reduction, nasal tip correction) and medically necessary nose operations (e.g. septum correction).

In our team, surgical nose corrections are performed by Dr. Redtenbacher and minimally invasive nose corrections by Dr. Handl: Non-surgical rhinoplasty

Septum correction

Septum correction is performed not only for aesthetic but also for medical reasons. The nasal septum inside the nose may be crooked and can even impair nasal breathing. This can lead to sinusitis, throat or middle ear infections. A crooked septum is usually also visible from the outside. In these cases, a septum correction is helpful.

The procedure chosen depends on the type of correction. Which procedure is used in a nose operation naturally depends strongly on the medical indication. Procedures on the outer nose – including cosmetic operations – are usually carried out as a rhinoplasty, for example to remove a hump on the nasal bone or to change the nasal tip or the nostrils.

So-called septoplasty is used to correct the nasal septum. Problems with the septum can either be congenital or the direct result of an accident. During the operation, the crooked parts are removed, straightened and put back. A nasal packing may also be inserted to stop bleeding.

In a detailed consultation, the individual requirements, ideas and desired result as well as what is feasible are discussed precisely. Not every nose can be reduced without limit, for example. Dr. Redtenbacher will be happy to advise you comprehensively on the possibilities, limits and risks of the procedure.

A thorough preliminary examination is the basic requirement for a nose operation. Only a positive result of this examination paves the way for surgery. To avoid slowing down the healing process, it is advisable to stop drinking alcohol, smoking and taking painkillers around 14 days before the procedure.

Wearing a nasal splint is recommended for at least two weeks after the operation. The splint protects the nose and fully shapes it until the tissue has completely stabilised. Sport and physically strenuous activities should be avoided as far as possible in the first four weeks.

The day of surgery

On the day of your treatment, we ask you to arrive at the clinic at least 4 hours before the operation. This allows you to check in calmly at the private clinic, just like at a hotel. After the usual admission procedures, you are taken to your room and the anaesthetist goes through all the details of the anaesthesia with you once more.

Directly before the operation, you are measured and photographed again, and everything is carefully documented. You can express wishes and ask questions at any time.

Because Dr. Handl never operates under time pressure, the operating time varies depending on the surgical technique, the anatomical conditions and the effort involved.
After the operation, you spend the first hours in the recovery unit. The experienced nursing staff look after you constantly until you feel fit enough for your own room.
Once you are back in your room, you can also receive private visitors.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

In the consultation, your nose is analysed in relation to your whole face, and we discuss what can be changed, including whether nasal breathing should be improved. If your nasal breathing is obstructed, please bring your ENT findings. For small corrections, a non-surgical treatment with hyaluronic acid may also be an option.

Before the operation under general anaesthesia, a health check and an anaesthesia briefing take place. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, as well as alcohol and, if possible, nicotine, which delays wound healing. Plan around two weeks without important appointments.

Risks

As with any operation, bruising, swelling, secondary bleeding, infection and wound-healing problems can occur. The anaesthetist discusses the risks of general anaesthesia with you beforehand.

After a rhinoplasty, swelling and bruising around the eyes are common, and nasal breathing is restricted for a few weeks. Nosebleeds, numbness of the nasal tip and small irregularities of shape are possible. The final shape only shows after about a year; in rare cases, a revision is necessary.

In the informed-consent consultation, all risks are discussed in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

After the operation, you stay in the clinic. For at least two weeks, you wear a nasal splint that stabilises the new shape. Cool the eye area, sleep with your upper body raised and do not blow your nose. Nasal breathing is restricted at first.

Office work is possible after three to four days; the recovery phase lasts about 14 days. Check-ups take place around the 2nd, 7th and 20th day. Avoid physical exertion for at least four weeks and wait six weeks before doing sport. Do not wear heavy glasses for a few weeks. The final shape shows after about a year.

Frequently asked questions

Which method of nose correction is right for me?

Different methods are used depending on the type of correction. In a personal consultation, Dr. Redtenbacher will be happy to take the time to clarify your individual requirements and wishes and advise you on the method best suited to you. Small corrections, such as evening out a small hump, are often possible minimally invasively, for example with hyaluronic acid injections. More extensive changes to the shape and size of the nose, or a septum correction, require surgery.

What are the risks of a nose correction?

As with all surgical procedures, a nose correction carries risks. These depend on the method used. In a personal consultation, Dr. Redtenbacher informs you in detail about all the risks of the procedure.

How long does a nose correction take?

A surgical nose correction usually takes 1–2 hours. Small minimally invasive corrections usually take only about 15–30 minutes.
