Hyperhidrosis & sweating

Treating excessive sweating

Clothes soaked with sweat, bothersome sweat stains or unpleasant odour: while sweating is vital for regulating our body temperature, people who suffer from hyperhidrosis or sweat particularly heavily often feel a great deal of distress. Social life can also be severely restricted by excessive sweating.

Hyperhidrosis is often genetically determined. A distinction is made between primary hyperhidrosis, for which usually no specific cause can be identified, and secondary hyperhidrosis, in which excessive sweating can be a sign of an illness.

It therefore makes sense to clarify before a hyperhidrosis treatment whether there are neurological disorders or, for example, thyroid disease or diabetes.

Every treatment is preceded by a detailed consultation with Dr. Handl, who advises you on the possibilities and risks of a treatment.

Injection treatment has proven to be a particularly safe and gentle method of treating hyperhidrosis. Targeted injections in the most severely affected areas can significantly reduce sweating there. After three to five days, the treated areas are free of sweat.

Botulinum for sweating

Sweating can be a major problem for many people, especially when it is excessive and uncontrollable. One way of treating excessive sweating is with botulinum.

At his practice in Vienna, Dr. Handl offers an effective and lasting treatment for excessive sweating. The procedure is simple and effective and is performed on an outpatient basis. Botulinum is injected into the affected areas of the skin to reduce the activity of the sweat glands.

The effect of the treatment lasts several months and can be repeated if necessary. It is a safe and effective alternative to other treatments such as antiperspirants or surgery.

If you suffer from excessive sweating, you can contact Dr. Handl to find out more about the options for botulinum treatment. He will advise you in detail and help you find a tailor-made solution for your individual needs.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

In the consultation, Dr. Handl clarifies which areas are affected, for example the armpits, hands or feet. Shave your armpits one to two days beforehand and do not use deodorant on the day of treatment. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication for a few days beforehand. Cooling and an anaesthetic cream are usually enough to numb the area.

Risks

Small bruises, redness and pain at the injection sites are possible. When the hands are treated, the strength of the finger muscles can temporarily decrease slightly. Some patients notice increased sweating in other parts of the body. The effect of botulinum is limited in time and usually lasts several months. Allergic reactions are very rare.

In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

You can return to your everyday life straight away. Avoid physical exertion, saunas and heavy sweating for two to three days; sport is possible again after about three days. Do not massage the treated areas. The effect begins after a few days and is complete after about two weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Which areas is the treatment suitable for?

The treatment is particularly well suited to reducing sweating in the armpits, but other areas may also be possible. Dr. Handl will be happy to advise you individually in the consultation.

Is the treatment painful?

Only a brief pain from the injection. The treatment is usually perceived as only slightly painful.

How long does the result last?

The result lasts for 3–6 months.

What are the risks of the treatment?

It is a very low-risk treatment. In the consultation, Dr. Handl informs you in detail about all the risks of the treatment method.

How does the treatment work?

Once the individual requirements, the patient's desired result and any open questions have been clarified in the consultation, the treatment follows. It is a short outpatient treatment of a few minutes. As a rule, you can go out in public again straight afterwards.
