Brazilian butt lift – BBL

Contouring the buttock area

Full, round buttocks are no longer just a Brazilian ideal of beauty. More and more women worldwide would like firm, shapely buttocks. A Brazilian butt lift is a surgical method of enlarging the buttocks that is becoming increasingly popular not only in Brazil but also in Europe and the USA. The buttocks often lose shape with natural skin ageing, major weight loss or other factors. Targeted training is often not enough to achieve the desired shape. A surgical procedure such as the Brazilian butt lift can help.

There are two different methods for a Brazilian butt lift: volume can be built up either by inserting special implants or by using your own fat. While the implants are usually made of silicone, your own fat is taken from other areas of the body such as the abdomen or thighs and then injected into the buttocks. The advantage of this method is that your own fat looks and feels very natural. Implants, on the other hand, can carry an increased risk of complications such as implant displacement or infection if used improperly or if they are of poor quality.

The result of a Brazilian butt lift is round, firm buttocks, which for many people are part of today's ideal of beauty. A buttock lift that additionally tightens and smooths the skin can also be performed as part of the enlargement. Which method is best for you depends on the result you would like and is discussed in a personal consultation with Dr. Handl. Physical factors such as having enough of your own fat or the condition of your skin also play a role.

It is important to note that, as with any operation, risks and possible complications can occur with a Brazilian butt lift. Thorough information about the procedure, risks and healing process is therefore essential. As an experienced specialist in plastic, aesthetic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Handl will be happy to advise you and performs the procedure professionally.

With implants

Get the perfect buttocks with a Brazilian butt lift, a method of enlarging the buttocks. Over time, the buttocks lose shape due to factors such as natural skin ageing or major weight loss, which targeted training often cannot reverse. The Brazilian butt lift is a surgical method that is also becoming increasingly popular in Europe and the USA.

There are two methods for the Brazilian butt lift: either by inserting special implants or by using your own fat. Implants are suitable for patients who do not have enough of their own fat for liposuction in other areas of the body but would still like rounder buttocks.

Through an incision in the cleft between the buttocks, the implant can be inserted into the gluteal muscle. The optimal position of the implants is checked precisely, and the skin is closed in several layers so that it is well stabilised and holds, above all during the post-operative phase of mobilisation (walking, sitting).

It is usually advisable to place a drain for the first few days to remove blood or wound fluid that would otherwise collect in the implant pocket. To support the buttock implants and secure their position, a compression garment should be worn for the first 2 months. In addition, only sleeping on your front is allowed in the first weeks.

In any case, a period of rest is very important, in which physical activity is reduced to a minimum to give the body time to recover and heal. Sport should be avoided for a longer period of about 6 to 8 weeks.

Dr. Handl will be happy to advise you in a personal consultation to find the method that suits you best and give you the buttocks you have always dreamed of.

The procedure

Dr. Handl, an experienced surgeon in Vienna, looks after his patients carefully and personally on the day of their Brazilian butt lift. The day begins with a conversation between surgeon and patient to discuss the individual course of the procedure.

During the procedure, an anaesthetist monitors the patient to make sure they remain stable and feel no pain. Dr. Handl removes excess fat from other areas of the body and then injects it into the buttock area to achieve the desired volume and shape. After the procedure, the patient is taken to a recovery room and monitored until they have woken from the anaesthesia and are stable.

On the day of the operation, the patient can usually be discharged home but should have someone to accompany and look after them. It is important that the patient gets plenty of rest and recovery in the first days after the operation and does not overexert themselves. Dr. Handl gives his patients special instructions on care and recovery to make sure the result is as harmonious and lasting as possible. Most patients need about 3 to 4 weeks to recover fully and resume their normal daily routine.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

A Brazilian butt lift requires enough of your own fat on the abdomen, hips or thighs. In the consultation, Dr. Handl assesses the donor areas and discusses the desired shape with you. Your weight should be stable, as the transferred fat changes with your body weight.

Before the operation under general anaesthesia, a health check and an anaesthesia briefing take place. Buy a seat cushion in advance for the first weeks. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, as well as alcohol and, if possible, nicotine, which delays wound healing.

Risks

As with any operation, bruising, swelling, secondary bleeding, infection and wound-healing problems can occur. The anaesthetist discusses the risks of general anaesthesia with you beforehand.

In a Brazilian butt lift, fat removed by liposuction is transferred to the buttocks. Some of the fat is broken down again by the body, and contour irregularities, hardening or oil cysts are also possible. Very rare but serious is a fat embolism. For this reason, the fat is placed exclusively in the layer above the muscle. To protect against thrombosis, you receive thrombosis prophylaxis for about seven days.

In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

You stay in the clinic for one to two nights. You receive thrombosis prophylaxis for about seven days. Wear a special compression garment for six weeks. Avoid direct pressure on the buttocks for six weeks: sleep on your front or side and only sit with a cushion under your thighs.

Swelling and bruising subside after one to two weeks. Office work is possible after about two to three weeks, full strain after six weeks. Some of the fat is broken down; the final result shows after about six months.

Frequently asked questions

How does an enlargement with implants work?

In a buttock enlargement with implants, an incision is made in the cleft of the buttocks, through which the implant is inserted into the gluteal muscle. The implants can be placed submuscularly (under the gluteal muscle) or intramuscularly (into the gluteal muscle). The optimal position of the implants is checked precisely. The skin is closed in several layers so that it is well stabilised and holds, above all during the post-operative phase of mobilisation (walking, sitting). Once healed, the incision is barely visible.

What speaks in favour of an enlargement with implants?

Buttock enlargement with implants is particularly suitable for patients who would like a marked enlargement of the buttocks. Implants allow a greater enlargement than your own fat. In very slim people, there is often not enough fatty tissue to achieve the desired increase in volume; in these cases, too, implants can be the more suitable method. Patients can choose between different implant shapes.

How does an enlargement with your own fat work?

A buttock enlargement with your own fat has two steps. First, liposuction is performed on a suitable area of the body to obtain fatty tissue that can later be injected to build volume. The fat obtained is then processed and placed in the buttocks.

Who is a Brazilian butt lift suitable for?

In principle, the procedure can be performed on all healthy patients who would like fuller, rounder buttocks. Thanks to the tightening and plumping effect of the Brazilian butt lift, the procedure is also well suited when the buttocks have become slack and sunken, for example after major weight loss or due to age. Patients who would like firmer buttocks are therefore also suitable for this form of buttock enlargement.

What are the risks of the procedure?

As with any surgical procedure, there is a certain risk of complications with a Brazilian butt lift. After the treatment, bruising, swelling and secondary bleeding can occur in the buttock area, but these usually subside by themselves after a short time. Numbness or a feeling of tension can also occur in the first period after the treatment. In a personal consultation, Dr. Handl informs you in detail about all possible risks of the procedure.

Will there be visible scars after a Brazilian butt lift?

Depending on the method chosen, small scars remain, but they are made as inconspicuous as possible and positioned so that they are barely visible. Patients can also help the scars heal optimally by regularly using scar care products and protecting the scar from direct sunlight.

Is the procedure painful?

Because the procedure takes place as an inpatient under general anaesthesia, it is not felt to be painful. In the first days after the procedure, pain can occur, which can be managed with painkillers. Numbness or a feeling of tension may be noticed in the first period after the treatment.

How long does the procedure take?

The operation takes three to four hours.

What do I need to consider before the procedure?

Before an operation, it is important to avoid medication that affects blood clotting where possible (e.g. aspirin). You should also largely avoid alcohol and cigarettes. Nicotine can reduce the blood supply to organs and delay wound healing, so we recommend giving up cigarettes as far as possible during the treatment phase. You will find out more in your consultation with Dr. Handl.

What do I need to consider after the procedure?

After the procedure, you recover in the clinic until the next day. After an enlargement with implants, a drain is placed to remove blood or wound fluid that would otherwise collect in the implant pocket. The treated areas are supported by a dressing and/or a special compression garment. In the first weeks after the procedure, you may only sleep on your front. It is very important to take it easy physically in the first weeks and avoid strain on the buttocks. Sport should be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks. Using scar care products is recommended.

When can I do sport again after a Brazilian butt lift?

As a rule, sport should be avoided for 6 to 8 weeks.

How long does the result of a Brazilian butt lift last?

A long-term, lasting result is achieved.

How long will I be off work after a Brazilian butt lift?

Taking about 10 days off work after the procedure is certainly sensible to give yourself time to recover. A suitable seat cushion is recommended for the first 3 weeks after the operation.

Does a Brazilian butt lift also improve existing cellulite?

Especially when your own fat is used, individual problem areas can be improved in a targeted way. In many cases, the filling effect combined with tightening can bring a visible improvement.
