PRP treatment in Vienna

In brief

In a PRP treatment (platelet-rich plasma), Dr. Handl obtains platelet-rich plasma from a small blood sample and introduces it into the skin for a fresher complexion. The treatment takes about 30 minutes; cooling and an anaesthetic cream are enough to numb the area. There is no downtime, and the effect begins after several days. Prices start at €380.

PRP treatment

Treatment with your own blood – the vampire lift

Whether fine lines, a beginning loss of elasticity in the face, neck and décolletage, or the treatment of dark circles under the eyes: PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is the new fountain of youth in aesthetic medicine. The potential of the body's own growth factors for healing chronic wounds has been researched since 1960. Since 1998, clinical studies have investigated this new method and described its effectiveness.

This treatment option is now also used in aesthetic medicine and is the new trend for “cell renewal”. The result is long-lasting skin rejuvenation and wrinkle smoothing. The lost radiance of the skin, the “glow effect”, can also be restored with PRP treatment. In addition, PRP treatment is low-risk, as it uses plasma from your own blood. Allergic reactions or intolerances can therefore be ruled out with a high degree of certainty.

Supplying the cells with nutrients is the prerequisite for healthy tissue. These growth factors are transported in the blood through particularly fine vessels (capillaries) to, for example, the hair roots. If this supply is reduced or disturbed, the tissue loses its nourishment and cell breakdown begins (e.g. hair loss, wrinkles). Modern PRP therapy supports cell renewal in the treated area.

“For successful and lasting treatment with your own blood, we rely on the most modern PRP system from Arthrex. I will be happy to explain the method and treatment options to you in a consultation,” Dr. Handl

PRP treatment – platelet-rich plasma

For Dr. Handl, the step towards treatment with your own blood is always preceded by a detailed consultation. All your questions are answered, and the treatment methods as well as your individual options and prospects of success are discussed.

The treatment process: before the PRP treatment, blood is taken from the patient. This blood is specially filtered (plasmapheresis) and prepared by centrifugation. This process obtains the platelet concentrate needed for the treatment from the blood.
In a minimally invasive procedure, this concentrate is then injected precisely into the treatment area. The activation of the cells triggered in this way stimulates cell regeneration.

The entire procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and after a short rest you can return to your everyday life.

To secure the success of the therapy, regular check-ups take place after the treatment. To achieve an optimal result, we recommend three treatments in the first six months, followed by a treatment every six months. Dr. Handl will be happy to answer your personal enquiries.

Preparation, risks and aftercare

Preparation

In the consultation, Dr. Handl discusses with you whether PRP is suitable for your concern, for example your complexion, fine lines or dark circles. Drink enough on the day of treatment and, after consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication and alcohol for a few days beforehand. For the treatment, a little blood is taken and processed.

Risks

As only the body's own plasma is used, allergic reactions are not to be expected. Redness, swelling and small bruises at the injection and blood collection sites are possible, and infections are rare. The effect develops over several days to weeks and varies from person to person. Several sessions are usually needed for a good result.

In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.

Aftercare

You can go out in public again straight away; slight redness usually subsides within a day. Avoid make-up and sport on the first day and saunas and strong heat for a few days. Remember sun protection. The effect begins after several days. If needed, a check-up takes place after about one week.

Frequently asked questions

What is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. It is a concentrated blood plasma, i.e. the patient's own blood that has been separated from its other components (mainly the red blood cells). PRP contains a very large number of platelets (thrombocytes), growth factors, proteins and white blood cells.

Who is PRP treatment suitable for?

The treatment is suitable for all ages and skin types. It is particularly recommended for people who want to improve their complexion naturally and without surgery. PRP is especially well suited to skin rejuvenation and wrinkle treatment. Fine facial lines can be treated with PRP therapy, as can stretch marks and wrinkles on the neck and décolletage. PRP can also be used very well to stimulate hair growth. Another area of application is improving wound healing and treating scars, for example reducing acne scars and surgical scars. As no synthetic substances are used, there is no risk of intolerance even for sensitive skin. Only in the case of existing illnesses or circulatory or blood-clotting disorders is PRP treatment not advised. Dr. Handl will advise you on this in detail in an individual consultation.

Is there an immediate effect after a PRP treatment?

PRP treatment brings about a consistent improvement in the treated area. There is no immediate effect, because cell renewal takes place slowly. Your treatment is documented with photos, so you can follow your progress using the pictures.

How many PRP treatments are needed for the desired result?

PRP treatment triggers a gradual improvement in the treated area. Depending on the body region, a different number of sessions is needed. An improvement of the complexion is possible after just 2–3 sessions. For the treatment of hair loss, regular treatment intervals are recommended.

How far apart should the treatments be?

It often makes sense to carry out the first sessions a few weeks apart until the desired result is achieved, and then to refresh it at longer, regular intervals.

What are the risks of the treatment?

It is a relatively gentle and low-risk procedure. No synthetic substances are used, so intolerances can be ruled out. Directly after the treatment, mild side effects such as redness, swelling and bruising may occur, but these usually subside within 2–3 days. In the consultation, Dr. Handl informs you in detail about all the risks of the treatment method.

Is the treatment painful?

PRP treatment is generally a procedure with little pain. As a rule, patients only feel slight pricks. The skin areas concerned are also numbed with a special anaesthetic cream before the procedure.

How does the treatment work?

First, the individual requirements and the patient's desired result are discussed in detail in a consultation with Dr. Handl. Dr. Handl explains the exact procedure and informs you about possible risks and side effects. An individual treatment plan is also drawn up together with the patient. The treatment takes place on an outpatient basis and has two steps: taking the blood and injecting the processed plasma. The treatment takes about one hour in total. Afterwards, you can go straight home.

What should I bear in mind before the treatment?

About one week before the treatment, you should stop taking aspirin, Voltaren, ibuprofen and similar painkillers and anti-rheumatic drugs, as these can inhibit the vitality of the platelets. Dr. Handl will be happy to discuss with you in detail beforehand which medications you can take.

What should I bear in mind after the treatment?

Patients can return to their usual commitments straight away. For the first few days, however, sport, saunas, strong sunlight and sunbeds should be avoided.
