Breast reshaping in Vienna
Tuberous breasts, asymmetrical breasts (anisomastia), underdeveloped breasts (micromastia)
Malformations of the breast gland or marked asymmetries of the breasts, which can develop in girls during breast growth between the ages of 10–12 and 21, often limit women's self-esteem and quality of life. Malformations of the breast gland are colloquially referred to as “tuberous” or “tubular” breasts – an unflattering name for a physical problem that can be very distressing for women. The same applies to the absence of the breast gland or chest muscle, known as Poland syndrome.
Breast malformations can cause considerable psychological distress in girls and women. These malformations can be congenital or acquired. Congenital malformations include, for example, tuberous breasts, in which the breast gland is irregularly shaped, resulting in an unaesthetic appearance. Poland syndrome, in which the breast gland or chest muscle is underdeveloped on one side, is also one of the congenital breast malformations.
Acquired malformations can result, for example, from operations, injuries or radiotherapy. Sagging of the breasts after pregnancy or weight loss can also lead to an asymmetrical breast shape.
The effects of breast malformations can be very distressing and can severely affect the self-confidence of the women concerned. They often feel uncomfortable in their own skin, suffer from feelings of shame and avoid, for example, public swimming pools or other activities in which their breasts might be visible.
In plastic surgery, there are various techniques for correcting breast malformations. Dr. Handl specialises in this field and can improve the aesthetic appearance of the breasts through individually adapted surgery. Care is always taken to keep the scars as small and inconspicuous as possible.
Such an operation can not only strengthen the self-esteem of the women concerned but also help to improve their quality of life considerably. However, it is important that the decision for surgery is made after a detailed consultation and examination with an experienced specialist in order to clarify individual needs and options.
To promote well-being in your own body and to minimise the strain and limitations caused by discomfort, plastic surgery offers affected patients lasting solutions for an aesthetic breast shape.
Dr. Handl is an expert in aesthetic breast surgery and has specialised in this field for years. Particularly complex corrections of breast shape are his surgical focus.
Surgical methods
Restoring the shape of the breast
The treatment of tuberous breasts and breast malformations requires specialist knowledge and skills in breast surgery. Dr. Handl specialises in this area of aesthetic surgery and has extensive experience in correcting these breast malformations.
In the treatment of tuberous breasts, a combination of surgical techniques is often used to give the breasts a more natural shape. This can involve, for example, different incisions, implants or fat transfer. An important prerequisite for a successful result is individual consultation and examination of the patient in order to choose the best treatment option.
Other breast malformations such as Poland syndrome often require special techniques such as the use of the patient's own fat or the reconstruction of missing breast tissue. Here too, individual planning and consultation are key to achieving an optimal result.
The exact surgical method is always tailored to the patient's individual circumstances. Dr. Handl takes plenty of time for a detailed consultation and examines the breasts carefully in order to find the best possible surgical method.
Breast reshaping: the day of surgery
On the day of your breast reshaping, we ask you to arrive at the clinic at least 4 hours before the operation so that you can check in calmly, as in a hotel. After the usual admission procedures, you are taken to your room and the anaesthetist goes through all the details of the anaesthesia with you once more.
Before the operation, you are measured and photographed again, and careful documentation is prepared. You can voice wishes and ask questions at any time.
Dr. Handl takes enough time for every operation, so the duration can vary with the surgical technique, your anatomy and the effort involved.
After the operation, you spend the first hours in the recovery unit, where experienced nursing staff look after you until you feel fit enough to go to your room.
Once you are in your room, you can also receive private visitors.
After breast reshaping
After breast reshaping, you will feel tired and use the rest of the day to recover. The next morning, Dr. Handl comes to see you on his ward round and discusses everything necessary for your discharge from the clinic. You arrange your first check-up and begin the aftercare programme.
Every patient experiences pain differently and healing is individual. Experience shows, however, that after just a few days you can go out in public and do light work.
It is important to take it easy and, in the first weeks after the operation, not to lift objects over 5 kg or stretch your arms above shoulder height. Also avoid sleeping on your front for the first two weeks.
About 14 days after the operation, the stitches are removed and you can bathe normally again. Make sure, however, that the scar is not exposed to direct sunlight in order to achieve an aesthetic scar.
It is important to wear the sports bra consistently day and night for the first 4–5 weeks. The check-ups take place at increasing intervals until treatment is complete.
Preparation, risks and aftercare
Preparation
In breast reshaping, every starting point is different, for example a congenital malformation such as tuberous breasts, a marked asymmetry or an unsatisfactory result of a previous operation. Please bring any existing surgical reports and your implant passport. In the consultation, Dr. Handl plans the combination of techniques your breasts need.
Before the operation under general anaesthesia, a health check and an anaesthesia briefing take place. From the age of 30, Dr. Handl recommends a precautionary breast examination with ultrasound or mammography before any breast surgery. After consulting us, avoid blood-thinning medication such as aspirin, as well as alcohol and, if possible, nicotine, which delays wound healing.
Risks
As with any operation, bruising, swelling, secondary bleeding, infection and wound-healing problems can occur. The anaesthetist discusses the risks of general anaesthesia with you beforehand.
Reshaping changes tissue that has often already been operated on or is naturally uneven. Depending on the technique, scars, changes in nipple sensation and remaining slight asymmetries are possible. If implants are inserted or exchanged, their typical risks such as capsular contracture or displacement are added. Rarely, a revision is needed.
In the informed-consent consultation, Dr. Handl discusses all risks in detail and in relation to your personal situation.
Aftercare
After the operation, you wear a sports bra day and night for four to five weeks. It supports the new shape and takes strain off the scars. Office work is usually possible again after two days; avoid sport and heavy lifting for four weeks.
Depending on healing, check-ups take place around the 7th, 14th and 28th day. Protect the scars consistently from the sun in the first year.
Frequently asked questions
What types of breast malformation are there?
Tuberous breasts: in this malformation, the breasts are unusually shaped and can be flat or conical. The nipple may point outwards and the skin around the areola may be constricted. Funnel chest (pectus excavatum): a malformation in which the breastbone is curved inwards, causing a hollow in the chest. Poland syndrome: a rare congenital anomaly in which one breast is smaller or underdeveloped, often accompanied by malformations of the muscle tissue of the chest and arm on the same side. Gynaecomastia: this affects men and refers to excessive development of breast tissue. It can occur on one or both sides. Breast asymmetry after breast augmentation: sometimes the breasts can end up uneven in size or position after breast augmentation surgery. Webbed neck: a malformation in which excess skin extends over the neck and chest area, which can lead to an unusual breast shape. Anisomastia: a significant difference in the size of the breasts. Underdeveloped breasts (hypoplasia): underdevelopment of the breast tissue, leading to smaller breasts. Overdeveloped breasts (macromastia): the opposite of hypoplasia, in which the breasts are unusually large. Situs inversus: a rare genetic anomaly in which the internal organs are mirrored; this can also affect the shape and position of the breasts. Other congenital deformities: there are many rare congenital breast deformities that can affect the shape and structure of the breasts in different ways.
Can breast shape be corrected with a breast implant?
Yes, breast shape can also be corrected with a breast implant.
Will there be visible scars after breast reshaping?
Dr. Handl pays particular attention to keeping scars inconspicuous. The incision depends on your individual anatomy, but it is placed so that the scar is as inconspicuous and invisible as possible later on.
Is anaesthesia unhealthy?
The days of “harmful” anaesthesia are over. Modern anaesthesia has no effect on the brain's cognitive performance. There are no health restrictions after the operation.
When can I do sport again?
You should avoid sport for the first 4 weeks after the procedure.
When can I shower again after breast reshaping?
The first check-up after the operation takes place after about 4 days. If everything is in order at this check-up, you can shower. A proper bath is possible again one week after the stitches have been removed.
When are the stitches removed?
Your healing is monitored at regular check-ups, and the stitches are removed step by step from the 10th day.
When will the final result be visible?
A change can be seen immediately after the procedure. It takes about another 3 weeks for swelling or bruising to subside. Because the scar takes about a year to heal completely, the final result can only be assessed after this time.
What can I do to help the scars heal well?
Dr. Handl pays particular attention to keeping scars inconspicuous. For optimal healing, we also recommend using scar care products and protecting the scar from direct sunlight.
What do I need to consider before the procedure?
Before an operation, it is important to avoid medication that affects blood clotting where possible (e.g. aspirin). You should also largely avoid alcohol and cigarettes. Nicotine can reduce the blood supply to organs and delay wound healing, so we recommend giving up cigarettes as far as possible during the treatment phase. You will find out more in your consultation with Dr. Handl.
What are the risks of breast reshaping?
Like any surgical procedure, breast reshaping carries risks, for example wound-healing problems or scarring. In the consultation, Dr. Handl informs you in detail about all the risks of the procedure.
Is the procedure painful?
The procedure takes place under general anaesthesia and is usually not felt to be particularly painful. In the first days after the procedure, pain can occur, which can be managed with painkillers. Pain perception varies from person to person.
