Showering and bathing after a breast augmentation – personal hygiene
Showering and bathing after a breast augmentation require a little patience in the first weeks. After a breast augmentation, you should usually wait about 24 to 48 hours before showering again. This gives your body enough time to recover from the operation and minimises the risk of infection. However, it is important to follow your surgeon's instructions, as recommendations can differ from case to case. Dr. Handl can give you specific instructions on when you can start showering and what kind of shower is suitable for you.
Scars should stay dry at first
In the first days after the operation, you should avoid hot showers and the use of strong cleansing products and loofah sponges to prevent irritation or infection. Also avoid rubbing or massaging the breast area to support healing. It is important that you work closely with your surgeon during recovery and follow all instructions. When showering in the first week, the breasts should be left out and kept dry.
When can you shower again after a breast augmentation?
In general, it is possible to shower with plasters after a breast augmentation. However, this depends on the type of plasters and the surgical method used. As a rule, plastic surgeons use special plasters or dressings after the operation to protect and stabilise the breasts.
It is important that you follow your doctor's instructions exactly to avoid possible complications. In some cases, you may need to remove the plasters or dressings before showering or replace them with waterproof materials. Your plastic surgeon will tell you exactly when and how you can shower.
Bathing after a breast augmentation
After a breast augmentation with plasters, it is recommended to shower rather than bathe for several days to minimise the risk of infection. If you really want to take a bath, you should discuss this with your plastic surgeon to make sure it is safe and to receive instructions on caring for the wound. In some cases, it may be possible to bathe with waterproof plasters, but this depends on various factors such as the progress of healing, the condition of the wound and the type of plasters used. It is important that you follow your surgeon's instructions exactly.
Swimming after a breast augmentation
After a breast augmentation, you should wait at least 6 weeks before going swimming again. In the first weeks after the operation, you should avoid any contact with water to prevent infection or complications. Even when the wounds have healed, you may still have pain or feel that your breasts are sensitive.
It is important to give your body time to heal completely before you swim or take up other physical activities again. If you have concerns or questions about your specific recovery time, you should consult your plastic surgeon.
Don't forget UV protection!
Once you can bathe again, UV protection is important in summer. For optimal scar formation, the scars should not be exposed to daylight without UV protection. UV radiation can damage fresh scar tissue and lead to less aesthetic scars. For UV protection, you should use a cream with SPF 50 for the first months. Wait until the scar has healed completely: before applying sun cream to a scar, make sure that the wound has fully healed and there are no open areas left.
