Pregnancy after a breast augmentation

Pregnancy after a breast augmentation – what can you expect? There is no guarantee that a breast augmentation will keep the same appearance when a woman becomes pregnant, or that the breast shape will remain unchanged after a pregnancy. During pregnancy and breastfeeding, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations and changes in glandular and fatty tissue can affect the shape and size of the breasts. However, a pregnancy can also lead to unpredictable changes without a breast implant.

It is therefore important to have realistic expectations of a breast augmentation and to find out about all possible effects, including the effects of a pregnancy on the result. Good preparation and advice from the treating doctor can help the patient to be well informed and able to make a decision.

When is pregnancy possible after a breast augmentation?

After a breast augmentation, the breasts need up to 12 months to reach their final shape. It is therefore ideally advisable to wait for this healing phase before planning a pregnancy. However, if a pregnancy occurs earlier, this is not a problem. During pregnancy, the normal breast tissue changes, making the breasts larger overall. The breast implants stay in place and affect neither the pregnancy nor breastfeeding. However, it is important to note that the shape of the breasts can naturally vary greatly during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Although the implant continues to provide volume, the breasts may look noticeably different after a pregnancy than before.

Can you breastfeed with breast implants?

An important point in deciding on a breast augmentation is whether you want to be able to breastfeed later. Fortunately, breastfeeding after a breast augmentation is usually not a problem, as most implants are inserted through an incision in the inframammary fold and the breast tissue is not affected. Whether the implant is placed above or below the pectoral muscle is decided individually – in both cases it lies behind the breast gland and the milk ducts remain untouched. Nevertheless, you should inform your doctor about plans for pregnancy and breastfeeding in order to receive individual recommendations and tips if necessary. Dr. Handl always operates in a particularly tissue-sparing way so that the ability to breastfeed should not be lost.

Breast augmentation and the wish to have children

Dr. Handl is often visited by patients who come for a consultation on breast augmentation but also want to have children. A responsible plastic surgeon will never advise a patient to have a breast augmentation while she is actively planning a family. These patients should always be advised to have the operation once their family planning is complete. After pregnancy, there will be a completely new starting situation, and many women then want an aesthetic change, such as a breast lift.
